Europe and ATMS? Debit vs. Travelers cheques?

I'm canadian and i'm going to europe for three weeks. I'm on a tight budget, and i don't know what form of money to bring, whether to just use debit? Or to go and get travellers cheques. If i can use debit that would be great it's just i'm not sure how much they charge for fees and i can't afford to waste a ton of money on that! Someone help please! I'm going to my bank to ask about all that also but i just thought i would see if any travellers out there would know and could give advice!
