Is it better to take travellers cheques or use my maestro card when in america?

I am going to florida in 2 weeks and some people have advised me not to take travellers cheques but to use my maestro card in the ATM machines whilst there. Does anyone know if it costs more to do this than it does to pay out to change travellers cheques?
